Another Sunday in Yeppoon

Today was another perfect Sunday in Yeppoon – nice breeze and clear blue skies. I woke up nice and early, got in a solid workout, followed by a swim, and a few hours of work. I’m still working on that work-life balance thing, but sitting on the deck with a coffee surrounded by palm trees isn’t such a bad office so I’m okay with putting in a few hours while Rob’s still sleeping!

Once Rob was finished with his morning swim and coffee, we decided to ride our bicycles downtown for a late brunch. Yeppoon is full of cafes that serve beautiful breakfasts so it’s become the meal we most enjoy to go out for here.

On the way downtown, we pass a little area called Fig Creek where the bats hang out. When we were here in February last year, it took us nearly til the end of our visit to realize that the the marijuana smell at the grove here was actually from the bats. We hadn’t spotted them in the trees until then. Prior to that, we’d only seen them in the sky at dusk – a pretty incredible sight. It’s a bit creepy, but mostly, it’s fascinating! Their wing span is huge. Rob describes them as flying cats. They are actually called fruit bats, commonly referred to as flying foxes and they’re the largest flying mammal in the world.

Their bodies are furry and red.
I wasn’t able to get a picture of one with its wings spread so this only shows the size of their bodies.

When we finally arrived downtown, we picked a little cafe right across from the beach. Unfortunately, I haven’t gotten into the taking photos of my meals in restaurants trend, so I don’t have a picture to share. But I assure you, it was fabulous…poached eggs on a bed of smoked salmon, spinach, fresh avocado, feta and grilled mushrooms, yum!

In an effort to burn off some of that Hollandaise, we took the long way home, riding the opposite direction from home, up along the coast, and then taking the hilliest route back to our house. The hills were deadly but the views made it all worth while!

Catching our breath halfway up the hill to Wreck Point
The view from the top of the hill (Wreck Point). This is Cooee Bay, the beach closest to our house.
Not that we are short of options where beaches are concerned!

We were good and sweaty by the time we got home so the afternoon was spent swimming and relaxing by the pool (with maybe a rum and LLB…or two!)
