Pinefest

Now that we’re living somewhere new, we seem to be doing all kinds of things we would never have thought to do back home. This Sunday was a perfect example when we spent half the day at Pinefest and our appearance there even made the local paper!

Pinefest is a local event that raises money for not-for-profit groups in the community, families in need, and medical research and is also a way for the area to celebrate its pineapple farming. This year was the 50th year of the event. Pinefest is actually a full weekend affair that includes a formal ball, lots of live music, many different events on the beach and a parade. We decided to head down to the beach to watch the parade.

The downtown area of Yeppon is basically one street, with a boulevard down the centre that separates the two directions. Perfect for a parade because if you stand in the centre, you can catch the floats coming both ways. It also means that even when there are tons of people there, you never feel closed in in the crowd, which is great for me! Here are some pics of the day.

Lots of people came out even though the skies were threatening rain.

No parade is complete without marching bands.

And there was even a band on a float.

This was the biggest float of the day and they ended up having to take some air out of the lion so he could go past the trees.

I think Rob loved this float the best. I just liked seeing all the little kids riding and loving being able to make so much noise.

And of course there were lots of pineapple floats

And the best part…they gave out fresh pineapples 🙂

And just for you Miss Ava…camels on the beach
